When I was growing up we had neighbors on both sides, across the street, down the street and on the NEXT street who were there forever. They all had kids and we all grew up together. It was really wonderful. You don’t find that much anymore. We’re lucky enough, though, to have such a neighbor. He lived across the street when we bought our house almost 19 years ago, and he’s still there. We’re very glad he is, too. He’s a fabulous neighbor, and has become a great friend.

He called Hubs over last evening to show him what he had found. You see, he is an avid artifact hunter — Native American artifacts, that is. Things like arrowheads, points, knives, needles (which are made out of bone), scrapers and even hand axes. He’s been doing it for nearly 30 years! He knows exactly what to look for and where to look for it. He went out hunting with a new friend of his yesterday and ended up coming home with more than arrowheads.

Meet Pointer! Darrel found this poor little puppy waaaay out in the boon toolies, nearly starved and extremely dehydrated. It’s been anywhere from 90 to 100 degrees the last two or three weeks, so this little guy had to survive some pretty harsh conditions, considering he was clear out by Chimney Canyons. He is so skinny! His hip bones stick out and everything. It’s a given that someone dumped that poor puppy way out there and left him to die. But thankfully, in came Darrel. He quickly became the little dog’s hero and took him home to a safe, cool place with food, water and love. You should see the way that puppy looks at him! You can tell he knows that Darrel is his savior.

But the puppy wasn’t the only thing he found yesterday. He’s like a hound dog himself when it comes to artifact hunting! Here are some pictures of what he found, along with some of his collection (oh yeah, the deck of cards is there for size comparison):

New finds!

Isn’t that hand ax amazing?! If you or I had seen that we would have passed it by, thinking it was just a regular rock, huh. Just goes to show you that you really need to be educated in what to look for. One of these days he’s going to take Hubs out with him and teach him what to look for, and where to look for it. Fun! After he learns, I can go with him! I have always been completely enthralled with the Native American culture and their history. It would be a total thrill to find artifacts they left behind. Which reminds me, Darrel told us a very interesting story last night about what happened to a guy who took something from the ground which he shouldn’t have, but that will come in a later post.
