Yesterday Cheyenne and I were both exhausted. She was happy to be home and I was happy to just stare at her sleeping on the floor. We both had upset tummies, however, so we just relaxed and spent the day recuperating from the ordeal we’ve been through the last few days. Being together made us feel better, though.
In visiting with my husband about my wonderful new friends at Cat Blogosphere, he suggested that in honor of them I should write a story about Cosmos, the cat who was much more than a cat. I thought it was a fabulous idea, so this is for you my cat friends!
It was over 20 years ago when, out of seemingly nowhere, a cat appeared at our house. A very handsome gray cat with a lovely bushy tail that would whip to and fro whenever we came outside. Admittedly, and I apologize to my new friends, but I am not — or at least I wasn’t *wink* — much of a “cat person”, but there was just something about this cat that captured my interest from the beginning. We fed and watered him of course, but I never knew exactly where it was that he slept. When I would go outside to do my gardening every day he would just appear, talking up a storm and winding his way in and out, back and forth between my feet. But he only did that when I came out. It seemed that he was really only in love with me.
And I, in turn, fell in love with him and decided to name him Cosmos, since the universe seemed to have brought him to me.
One day I was very emotional about something …. I can’t even remember what it was, but I was sitting in my wicker chair on the porch crying and he was there with me. I may not be able to remember what I was upset about, but I definitely remember what Cosmos did: he jumped on my lap, stood on his back legs, put his front paws on my shoulders and I swear to you he gave me a hug. He absolutely gave me a hug. That was when I first realized he wasn’t “just a cat”. Back then I thought perhaps he was my Grandfather who had recently passed away, or maybe my Grandmother. I don’t know, but whomever he was, he was very good at comforting me and giving me hugs. He did it many times.
Then one day he was gone. He was gone as suddenly as he had appeared. I was heartbroken. But then I realized …… he had been sent to me for a specific reason, at a specific time, and had fulfilled his purpose, whatever it may have been. Perhaps it was to make me feel special. Or loved. Or watched over. Or taken care of. Or maybe it was just to give me some of the best hugs I’ve ever had.

I’m sure Cosmos moved on to help someone else through tough times. It’s amazing how the power of a pet can help us through.

Cassie, Bcarter, chat blanc, Jan’s Funny Farm, Sniffie and the Florida Furkids, Karen, PetMono and Luxor — I’m glad you all enjoyed hearing about Cosmos. I really do miss that cat. I would so love it if one day he suddenly reappeared.
As you said, Bcarter, I’m sure he moved on to the next person who needed his special kind of love and hugs.
