What’s Going On?
I am dumbfounded by the news reports I read yesterday regarding the soldier in Colorado Springs who shook his 7 week old daughter so hard that she died a day later, and the 4 U.S. soldiers who are charged with the brutal rape and murder of a 14 year old girl and the murder of her 5 year old sister and their parents in Iraq. They were members of 101st Airborne Division. The 101st Airborne Divison! One of the most well-respected units in the Army! HOW does this happen? WHY does this happen? I simply cannot wrap my mind around it. What the hell happens to these men? What turns them from defenders of freedom and democracy into rapists, murderers and baby killers? Someone please explain this to me.

Who knows what drives these men to such terrible crimes? Maybe the horrors of war.

I don’t know, Brent … men (and women) have suffered through the horrors of war for a long, long time. Maybe it’s just that we didn’t hear about that stuff so much way back when. I know crap like that went down in Nam, but I think back then the Armed Forces hushed it all up. Maybe that’s what it is. *shrug*

Well, my ex-husband was an award-winning, often-decorated firefighter, promoted to captain by the time he was 32, and is well-respected by everyone he’s ever met, and no one would EVER believe he’s a wife-beater. Why? Because he’s smart enough to know his behavior and impulses are unacceptable, so he bottles them up inside and unleashes them on women only after it’s too late (after they’ve married him).
People in positions of respect and authority are the most dangerous abusers and predators. 1) they are too smart to get caught, and thus never get help, and 2) people get close to them because they’re trustworthy.
Sad, sad indeed.
