Oh my! Quite the buzz going on in blogland about the 2003 Bloggie Award nominations. And I just. don’t. get it. Let’s get real, people — there is NO WAY a scientific nomination process is feasible! Do you have any idea how many blogs are out there??? Oh I suppose someone who truly wanted to put forth the immense time and energy it would take to devise such a process probably could, but … what’s the point?? Why do we blog?? For awards??? I’m sure there are people out there who are validated by the recognition, which makes me think they really should be blogging — for their own emtional well-being! But what really blows me away is the pettiness I’ve seen displayed across the blogging community since the news of the nominations hit cyberspace. It’s unbelievable to me.

Of course it’s a popularity contest! Is that genuinely a shock to some of you?? If so, I hate to break it to you, but everything is a popularity contest! We vote for the political candidate we like best; we want the girl representing our state in the beauty pageant to win; we cheer ourselves hoarse for “our” football team; and we voted for our best friend for student council treasurer in grade school!

Come on, is this really worth all of the ugliness that’s been going on?? No … it absolutely is not. To those who are nominated — Congratulations!! More power to ya’! And to those who are doing the criticizing and belittling — shame on you! Get over it already! (and eat a spoonful of sugar — it’ll help that sour taste in your mouth)
