By the Moon

I was doing some blog reading and noticed lattégirl and Chunks discussing country living and gardening, and I remembered something I had saved to blog about but never did. Have any of you ever done gardening by the moon? I had never even heard of it before. That is, not until I received the latest Old Farmer's Almanac newsletter. It sounds so cool! I think I want to try it this year. According to the newsletter:

Some gardeners put their full faith and trust in the idea of gardening by the Moon -- that is, setting out plants when the Moon either is full or on its way to being new, or when the Moon is new or on its way to being full. They swear by the outcome: bigger harvests and bigger blooms.

They have an Outdoor Planting Table that tells you what and when to plant, depending on your location, anywhere in the United States and Canada. That's something we can definitely use. The last few years our garden has been seriously lacking. It's become quite frustrating, actually. I don't know if the soil is depleted or what, but stuff just ain't growin' like it used to! Maybe if we plant by the moon this year we'll have a bumper crop! :) Oh man, there is NOTHING better than going out and picking a fresh tomato and eating it like an apple! Yummmmm!!

Thoughts from others

I only like little baby grape tomatoes, the big ones are too much.

I've never heard of moon planting before. The last couple of years my crops have been awesome. I try to move things around a bit, one year I plant my potatoes here and the next year I plant them over there. Certain items won't grow well next to other things, it's all a science!

I can't WAIT to get my feet in the dirt this year!

Wow - I am ASTOUNDED that you wrote about this, because not two weeks ago I got a moon phase calendar and was mulling over the idea of investigating planting by the moon!!! How uncanny is our timing!

And now I'm going to rib Rox a bit: they're called cherry tomatoes, not grape tomatoes. Hahaha! (Can't wait till she moves to the country!)

Terry, as my daughter used to say (when she was a little tyke), "Good minds think a lot". LOL Or maybe great minds think alike?

I hate to be the bearer of this news, but there really are such things as grape tomatoes. Sorry!
