Police officers .... sworn to serve and protect. So what is it that goes so horribly wrong that while they are serving and protecting us, they are abusing their own? Consider this story out of Tacoma, Washington --

excerpt:

Police Chief David Brame [....] shot her in the head with a semiautomatic handgun Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of a Gig Harbor shopping plaza. Their two young children, who were unhurt, sat in his car a few spaces away.

And this story from right here in my hometown --

excerpt:

According to a release from District Attorney Mark Adams, sheriff’s deputy Todd Workman, 33, was arrested and charged late Friday evening after the sheriff’s office was contacted by the physician who examined the infant. The child, whose name is not being released, was first taken to Sterling Regional MedCenter on April 23 and was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Denver with “serious trauma injuries.”

I have my theories. Mostly they deal with the fact that some law enforcement officers consider themselves above the law, with mega egos and "tough guy" personnas. And of course, they are the last to admit that what they are doing is abusive or illegal. What makes it even worse is the "boys club" mentality of their fellow officers who choose to cover up the behavior of their colleague, rather than confront them with it. It's unforgivable. I believe that each and every officer who was aware of the problem with regard to the former story, and did nothing, should be fired immediately. How can these officers rationalize what they do when, at the same time, they are going out on domestic violence and child abuse calls and arresting perpetrators of the same heinous behavior they, themselves, display behind closed doors???

I suppose the aforementioned profile fits any man/woman who is abusive, but one just expects a much higher standard from the men and women who are sworn to serve and protect.

If not, then ..... who is going to serve and protect the people they are abusing??

Thoughts from others

My fiance's exroomate used to be a cop. This is the same guy that needed to tell us, well, some really sick censored stuff about himself.

I have tons more stories about cops being assholes, including almost getting arrested for playing frisbee in a public park (at night, but before the closing time). Course they didn't believe me when I said I didn't have any id (who wants to play frisbee with a purse!).

Theres a reason for all those piggy jokes...

Thanks for the interesting read! I work for the police myself, and although I love most of my colleages, I know some can be jerks... Horrible stories like these however I have never come upon myself, luckily.

stories like this not only infuriate me, but they make me sad and it's one reason i don't like to read/watch the news. above the law? yes, there are some that think this and it's unfortunate for those that really want to 'serve and protect'.

on a lighter note, i love the new picture up top!
