Artistic Passion

There is a man who lives just 15 miles from here who, without question, embodies the term "passion for the art of creation". He is a sculptor, and has been amazing people with his art for the last 20 years. Now, he doesn't sculpt clay or mere busts of people -- he sculpts huge, giant works of art.

He began sculpting trees which were tagged for removal around the city. He requested permission from city officials and homeowners alike, and thus began his fame and notoriety. But, as well-known as he and his art become, he prefers to stay out of the limelight. A recent newspaper article read, in part:

" ... despite his local fame, the artist prefers to keep out of the spotlight, continuing to live and work nearby as a modest and shy artist whose endeavors have only made him more retiring."

After reading this article I was, once again, awestruck by this man's immense gift and genuine humility. I wish I could type out the entire article for you to read, but it is way too long. I relate so much to the things this man, the artist, says. In speaking about what his art means to him, he said:

"I love the fact that it is so much like life. Every decision you make is irrevocable. You run into things you didn't expect, and there's no putting pieces back, so you have to learn to work with what you've done."

Mind you, the man carves and sculpts without any kind of template other than what he might have drawn on a piece of paper, and sometimes nothing, aside for the picture in his head. Can you imagine that?? Scultpting something as huge as a tree and NOT making a mistake??? Or making one, but then turn around and make it beautiful?? Amazing!!

The article went on to say:

"As long as he can remember, he has never been too comfortable in big groups. The artist almost seems to seek refuge from the rest of the world when he works on his sculptures."

I SO know what that means!!!! I feel the very same way about my drawing, writing, and even web design. It takes me away to a peaceful, creative and exciting place, away from the madness of this world.

And I simply have to share this part:

I was interested to hear about this. Someone in my hometown in the UK did a similar thing and started something of a craze ---> http://homepages.tesco.net/~chrysbavey
That quiet place you go to when you create art can be pretty special, I agree. Love the website, by the way.

Wow, his work is breathtaking. That angel sculpture is absolutely amazing. I wish I could: a) afford it & b) fit it in my apartment. ;)
